Another 10 Important Rules to Live by
By Ken Hutton
1. Exercise every day. You're an animal, and animals need exercise. If you're up to it, exercise intensely, but only briefly. Think 'cheetah', not 'sloth'! Be prepared to calm down your exercise routine accordingly as you get older, but do something every day, even if it's only taking a walk. The human body is an amazing contraption, but, like anything else, if it never gets used properly it falls into disrepair, and surprisingly quickly.
2. Do something good just for the sake of it. Don't make a big deal of it. Just do a kindness because it's the right thing to do. And because it makes you feel as good as the person you're helping. Do you really need any more motivation than that?
3. Try not to judge anyone. It's a tough one, this, because we all tend to do it. Just keep in mind that everyone has their own problems and inner torments. Who are you to judge someone who might be going through your worst nightmare of hell right now?
And you know perfectly well that there have been times when you deserved to be judged harshly... we've all been there. So try not to judge. Unless, of course, you are in fact a judge! And even then, keep it for working hours only.
4. Eat properly. Don't eat like it's going out of fashion. Don't eat like a wolf. Or a sparrow. Just follow Nature's guidelines. Eat when you're hungry, not when the clock dictates. Eat till you feel you've had enough, then walk away. No gold stars for finishing every scrap. Although you will get a mention (as in "Wow, you've really packed on some weight recently!").
5. Be confident. Accept the fact that almost everyone is less confident than they appear. Most people manage to put up a front of confidence, while inside they're feeling as insecure as anyone else. Just knowing that can help you to attain real confidence.
Just be aware that you have real worth and value. There's no reason on earth why you shouldn't be confident. And remember, all you have to do is fake it till you make it!
6. Drink water. Every creature on earth needs water, and if you're not getting enough your health suffers, in all kinds of ways. Don't settle for the water in your tea or coffee. Or your alcohol! Drink a glass of plain water once or twice a day. If it's to your taste, add a tablespoon each of cider vinegar and honey and you have a wonderful, refreshing, tasty drink. Have it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. Sip it with your meals.
7. Stay open-minded. Let the other person make their point, and don't rush to dismiss it. Some of the most horrifying atrocities ever committed were perpetrated by people who were convinced they were doing the right thing. Many of them thought they had God on their side! Keep in mind that, as a general rule, if you think you have God on your side, you're mistaken.
8. Show respect. Respect your elders... they've already been there and done that. Respect animals... whatever your religion or beliefs, they are sharing this planet with us. Respect others' beliefs and viewpoints, whatever they may be... just as you would want them to respect yours.
9. Be good... but not too good! Life is for living. Let your hair down, once in a while. Enjoy yourself! Let yourself go! Do you want to look back years from now and wish you'd had more fun? Get it while you can! Fun, I mean.
10. Don't be a bystander. If you see someone being taken advantage of, in any walk of life, have the courage to step in and stand your ground. It's much easier to live with yourself later if you do the right thing. Would you like to know people were watching when you were in trouble, and nobody lifted a finger to help you?
